1. Criteria for sustainable tourism Over 8,000 conservation professionals gathered in Barcelona to elaborate guidelines for sustaining environmental systems and species diversity. A coalition of 27 organizations, known as the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria Partnership, issued criteria for sustainable tourism at a conference in Barcelona.
They focus on four areas: maximizing tourism's social and economic benefits to local communities; reducing negative impacts on cultural heritage; reducing harm to local environments; and planning for sustainability. The partnership was initiated by the United Nations Foundation and also included the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the American Society of Travel Agents, the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism, Expedia and the International Ecotourism Society among others.
2. Barcelona Design Week 2008 The third Barcelona Design Week opens its doors from 10-14 November, having become established as a leading event for promoting and debating design. This event is an initiative organized by the Barcelona Design Centre, that has the goal of promoting Barcelona as a city of creativity, design and knowledge.
3. Artfutura Festival Artfutura is the meeting point for digital creation and culture. The Festival celebrated in Barcelona its 19th anniversary in last October. The festival saw the Spanish premiere of "The Pixar Story", a documentary on the story of this animation studio, that tells the story of the Pixar animation studios, responsible for Toy Story and Looking for Nemo. Talks and screenings combined the latest trends in video games, animation and special effects.
4. Fantastic Barcelona on budget About 59.2 million foreign visitors last year made Spain the world's third-most-visited holiday destination. 5. FC Barcelona makes bid to bring MLS back to Miami "The Barcelona Football Club is partnering with Marcelo Claure, a Miami resident and the owner of FC Bolivar. The deal would make FC Barcelona the first club in Europe to have a direct tie to the American MLS. Major League Soccer announced in July plans to add two expansion teams in time for the 2011 season, boosting membership to 18. The 14-team league had already announced expansion plans for Seattle in 2009 and Philadelphia in 2010."
