NEWS & WHAT'S ON?

1. The Torre de les Aigües is to become a cultural and civic amenity

The Torre de les Aigües, part of the Sant Martí district's industrial heritage, will be restored and its complex given over to civic and cultural uses. It will house, for example, a museum on the Torre's history. The restoration will go ahead thanks to an agreement signed between the City Council and Aigües de Barcelona, under which the company will contribute over three million euros towards the redevelopment.

2. Barcelona to put forward a bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics

Barcelona's Mayor, Jordi Hereu, has announced that Barcelona will be launching a bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Barcelona would provide the setting for the indoor sports while the other events would be located in the Catalan Pyrenees. This would make Barcelona the first city to host both Olympic Games, the summer and the winter.

3. Barcelona will have eight daily high-speed trains bound for France

It will still be several years before the "small great revolution" of the high-speed railway comes to Barcelona to link us to France —expected for 2012— but when that strategic interconnection occurs, Barcelona's residents will have between eight and nine trains a day that will take them to Perpignan in 45 minutes.

After 32 albums in her 48 year career, the queen of folk has become a symbol of American traditional song and protest. The concert is to be framed within the Mil.leni X Festival. The concert will be the first on her Spanish tour, in which she will present songs from the album Day After tomorrow (Mastertrax).
