NEWS & WHAT'S ON?

1. The high-speed Barcelona-Madrid rail link sees off its first two years with eleven and a half million passengers

The high-speed rail line between Barcelona and Madrid is two years old and has already served eleven and half million passengers since it first came into operation. The most popular journey is the one between the two capitals. Most AVE (high-speed) passengers are men travelling to work.

2. Barcelona, a sports capital

Barcelona's commitment to sport in recent years has made it one of the world's sports capitals. In 2009 alone, it delivered one of the most sports-intensive of calendars, having organised, among other things, the Davis Cup, a leg of the Tour de France through its streets and the Salts Snowboarding Championships.

3. Minimum fine raised to 50 euros

Minimum fine for travelling on public transport in Barcelona without valid ticket raised to 50 euros. This amount must be paid within 30 days from the day following the penalty. If the fine is paid immediatly, the amount is reduced by 50% and, therefore, is 25 euros.

4. Barcelona - Green light to seven CCTV cameras in La Rambla

The City Council called for the placement of these security devices last year in order to improve the situation in the most troubled areas of La Rambla.

The system involves the installation of containers in which bicycles may be parked in order to provide greater safety and reduce vehicle theft. The 'Bicibox' is a large container with seven or fourteen compartments that open with a magnetic card.

3. Barcelona Guitar Festival 2010

Barcelona Guitar Festival 2010 Presents John Mayall, Paco de Lucia, Jorge Drexler or Cesaria Evora. The Guitar Festival starts this year with performances by Pat Metheny, Feb. 21 at the Auditorium of Barcelona, action that is followed by Pérez (March 27 in Sant Cugat-Barcelona) and Loquillo, April 9 at the Sant Jordi Club.
