Barcelona Beaches

Beaches in Barcelona

Before my comments about Barcelona Beaches, it is interesting to know the development of this important part of the Barcelona Tourism.
There are two Barcelona. One before and the other after the Olympic Games of 1992.
Before the Olympics, Barcelona City almost ignored its privileged location at the Mediterranean Sea coast. It was literally giving its back to the Sea!

The Olympics were the main reason to undertake a big transformation of Barcelona City.
Part of these changes were applied to spin the city and making it looks to the Mediterranean Sea.

Thanks to this concept and to the big amount of money necessary to make this project real, a clean-up procedure of the beaches and sea water became necessary.

As a result of it, today you benefit of clean, nice and enjoyable beaches!

Like Caribbean Beaches?

Of course, not!
In case you are looking for such a Sea water quality as well as the white and very fine Caribbean beaches sand, I am afraid you are in the wrong place...

Since most European Cities are taking serious care of the environment, Barcelona City is not the exception.
Barcelona Beaches and Sea water are under continuous cleaning procedures. It is a quality improving measure for an important part of the Barcelona Tourism.

Is it clean enough for swimming?
Yes, of course.
It is not like Caribbean, but you can relax at the sun, swim and enjoy of the Barcelona Beaches!

To Beach or not To Beach?

Barcelona Beaches extend over a little more than 4 Kilometers of nice looking, long and wide sandy beaches, which are waiting for you!
They are perfect for the relax at the sun that you are looking for, while you remain in Barcelona City and very near to every site that you want to visit.

Beaches in Barcelona are usually crowded at high season, but there is always room for everybody.
There are six very attractive beaches for your choice. Four of them are located to the North of the Olympic Port:

  • Nova Icaria
  • Bogatell
  • Mar Bella (nudist beach)
  • Nova Mar Bella

  • And two of them are located to the South of the Olympic Port:

  • Barceloneta
  • Sant Sebastia

  • Click on each of the Barcelona Beaches described above for detailed information.

    More Beaches

Yes, there are more nice beaches waiting for you in case you have time and do not want to stay near Barcelona City centre. Perhaps, because you want to have more room for you, or for any other reason.

At less than half an hour by train from Barcelona, either to the South or to the North, you will find good options. Longer and wider beaches, like Casteldefells, are located mainly to the South of Barcelona City.

The City of Sitges, popular among gays, is located at a few Kilometers from Barcelona and has very nice beaches too. As you can expect, there are also a couple of nudist beaches.
And you can go even further to Tarragona City...

Go here for more details about Sitges and Tarragona .

For the northern options, better go from Masnou and further beaches. You will also find beautiful sandy beaches with many options for eating and drinking.
Of course you can continue direction to North and explore the Costa Brava beaches. They are not so wide and long, but they have their own beauty.

Go here for more details about Costa Brava .
