The idea to have a contemporary art exhibition center started in the early 60's, when several exhibitions had taken place, and the wishes for a definitive location came out from a group of artists. But the political regime at that time did not play in favor of those wishes, nor to that of some of the exhibitions. Finally, the MACBA opened the doors to the public in November 1995. Though young in the list of museums in Barcelona, the MACBA has a high number of visitors and is a popular Barcelona sightseeing spot.
