4. The Gothic Quarter and El Born-La Ribera

If you love ancient architecture and culture (and perhaps even if you don't!), you will find The Gothic Quarter to be one of the fascinating places in Barcelona city. That's why we put it high on our list of top places to visit in Barcelona. There are some attractions in the Gothic Quarter that you simply shouldn't miss, such as the Gothic Cathedral, Palau de la Musica Catalana, the church of Santa Maria del Mar and, of course, the Picasso Museum.

We also like to recommend the cafe/restaurant Els Quatre Gats, which has been a favorite location since the late 19th century. One thing that makes it interesting is that it is in a building that was designed by Puig i Cadafalch, who is a famous architect. Starting in 1899, Pablo Picasso began to frequent this restaurant. He also created the title page of the menu.

Barcelona Highlights - Partial view of the Port Olimpic

5. The Seafront

Sometimes travelers miss seeing the seafront area, and that is a shame because this part of town is home to a variety of Barcelona attractions, such as the marina called the Port Olimpic. Once upon a time, Port Olimpic was just a run-down area. It was revitalized to host the sailing events in the 1992 Olympics. When you walk through Port Olimpic, one thing that will maybe surprise and amuse you is a giant bronze fish! It is a spectacular sculpture created by Frank Gehry.

We also recommend Maremagnum, which is a shopping center located right on the water. When you see Maremagnum from a distance, it looks just like a giant ship. Right in this area, you can find the Barcelona aquarium, which is one of the largest aquariums in Europe.

Another one of the Barcelona attractions not to miss is the Columbus monument. From this memorial, a wooden bridge for pedestrians called Rambla de Mar connects Las Ramblas with the Maremagnum area.

6. Montjuic Hill

Montjuic Hill is another one of the places to visit in Barcelona that we recommend to you if you want to get a good feel for the city. Located near the center of Barcelona, this hill provides an impressive view. Once upon a time a ceremonial spot for the ancient Romans, this area today has become a recreational area that was used for the Olympics in 1992.

There are a number of highlights in Montjuic including the Poble Espanyol, which is an attraction originally built for the 1929 Exhibition. This place is a Spanish village full of houses with different architecture.

Also be sure to check out the Olympic Ring, which is full of various sports facilities created for the Olympics, such as the Olympic Stadium. The curvy white Olympic Tower is remarkably modern and was designed by architect Santiago Calatrava.
