Parc de Ciutadella and the Zoo of Barcelona

The zoo is in the Parc de Ciutadella, which was created in the mid 19th century. This area is 70 acres in size, and a good deal of that land is taken up by the zoo, but there are other notable areas within the Parc de Ciutadella as well, such as the Parliament of Catalonia. Visitors can also expect to be treated to a variety of museums, such as the Museum of Zoology and Museum of Geology, and there is even a lovely lake.

The setting of the area is lovely, and you will see many people involved in a range of outdoor activities including cycling and even boating. Yet, it is the zoo that attracts the most attention year after year.

Like so many things in the city, the zoo has historical roots. Founded in 1892, the zoo now stands on the site of the 1888 Universal Exposition in the Parc de la Ciutadella. Today, the zoo is committed to educating the population of Barcelona and its millions of annual visitors on the importance of conservation and preserving global biodiversity.

Considering the fact that the zoo receives over a million visitors every year, this is one of the Barcelona attractions that is clearly playing an important role in this regard.

Very Diverse and a Must for Those Seeing Barcelona with Children

The zoo in Barcelona represents over 300 different species of animals, which makes it very diverse. This diversity not surprisingly comes into play for visitors and helps make a day to the zoo truly unique and memorable. Up until 2003, the zoo was rather renowned for being home to Snowflake, the world's only albino gorilla.

People from around the world came just to see this famous gorilla. While she has now passed away, there are many other unusual and unique animals to see. The zoo of Barcelona is a famous attraction which is recommended by almost any Barcelona travel guide.

With over 300 species of animals, it can be tough to pin down the best highlights, but you can never really go wrong with dolphins. The dolphin show at the zoo is very entertaining, and those in Barcelona with children will absolutely not want to miss the captivating and crowd pleasing performance of the dolphins.

Just note that this show does not come with your standard zoo ticket price, but must be added. There are other kid friendly activities included with the zoo admission, such as the pony rides and face painting, but you’ll have to visit on the weekends for these events.
