On February 12, 2016 a new metro line stretch with an extension of 20 Km was inaugurated and is now up and running providing a service between Barcelona city and El Prat airport. The driverless line is the “L9 Sud” that connects the station of “Zona Universitaria” with both terminals of Barcelona airport, T1 and T2.
First Metro to Barcelona Airport
This is the first Barcelona metro line that connects the metropolitan area with the airport. The line “L9 Sud” has 15 stops along 20 Km and covers important industrial areas, as well as the fairs and exhibition venues of Barcelona. Authorities made an important effort to inaugurate this new metro line before the Mobile World Congress, which will be held in Barcelona from February 22-25, 2016. This is the world’s biggest mobile event with almost 95,000 attendees, that now have the possibility to get from the airport to the fair area in about 15-20 minutes.
Connection with Barcelona Downtown
The “L9 Sud” metro line doesn’t take you to Barcelona downtown. Even when there are some stops providing connections to get to the city center or Plaza Catalunya, this new metro line is not your best choice. You might easily need 1h15 – 1h30 from the airport to Plaza Catalunya. Along the way you will find connections with Renfe trains, FGC trains as well as other metro and tram lines.
Special Fare To and From the Barcelona Airport
Those having a T10 card (10 journeys) or a single ride card (“Senzill”) have to pay an extra fee to get to the Barcelona airport, or from the airport to the city. This extra charge is called “airport ticket” and costs €4.50 (February 2016). It can be purchased at the metro access in the airport.
If you are a holder of tourist discount cards such as the Barcelona Card or Barcelona Card Express, or any Hola BCN transport cards, then you don’t need to worry about the extra charge. Those cards entitle the holder to get from/to the Barcelona airport without any additional charge. You can buy the Barcelona Card or buy the Hola BCN Card.
To get in or out of the airport, you will have to validate your ticket. If you have a wrong card, then you must pay extra and buy the “airport ticket” to be allowed to get in or out of the Barcelona airport.
Budget Tip for Traveling To and From Barcelona Airport
If you want to use a T10 card (10 journeys) and don’t have it, you can buy it at the train station at terminal T2. From there you have the train R2 to Barcelona downtown. At terminal T1 you can buy the T10 card in some tobacco shops. Then you may take the bus 46 to Plaza Espanya or board the terminal shuttle bus to T2 and catch the train R2 there.
In Barcelona downtown you can buy the T10 card at any metro station. Then you can take the bus 46 from Plaza Espanya to Barcelona airport T1 and T2, or take the train R2 in Passeig de Garcia stop (5 minutes from Plaza Catalunya) to terminal T2.
