Look for Low-Cost Flights to Barcelona or Package Holidays

Reasons for Barcelona travel are many, and you can find them by reading some pages of our Barcelona tourist guide. But, how to make a budget travel to get to Barcelona?

In general, whether you want to travel to Barcelona from outside Europe or from another European country, overall we recommend trying to find a direct flight into the Barcelona airport, which is called the Barcelona El Prat airport. It got this name because it is located at El Prat de Llobregat.

Beware that some “Cheap Flights” might not land at BCN El Prat Airport but at Girona Airport or Reus Airport, which are more than 100Km away from Barcelona. Plus, the transportation between these airports and Barcelona might not run at convenient times for you.

Even though Barcelona airport is the 31st busiest in the entire world, operations run very smoothly, and you can often get some great rates for a Barcelona Spain travel. Plus, this airport is located very conveniently at only about 12kms from Barcelona city! This short distance means that you can quickly get off the plane and to your destination.

Travel to Barcelona into Girona or Reus Airport

There are 2 “neighboring” airports, Girona airport and Reus airport. People often select one of these airports because they believe that if they go “around” the Barcelona airport, they will end up saving money. But what these tourists often don't realize is that it will take more time and money to get to these airports.

For example, the Girona airport is located 100Km away from Barcelona in the north, at 12Km of Girona city. The Reus airport is also more than 100Km outside of Barcelona by the beaches of Costa Daurada, near Tarragona. Either way, you will have more than an hour and a half of additional travel time.

As a result, you may have to leave Barcelona at an inconvenient time like 2 am, or 3 am just to get to one of these airports for a morning flight. In the end, you will experience some extra hassle, never-mind the additional travel expenses to get to these airports. And not to mention if you want to take a taxi. It will cost more than your flight!

A Barcelona City Trip from Other European Countries

If you are arriving in Barcelona from another country in Europe, you can consider options outside of just flying. For example, you could drive, take a train or even a bus. Here are a few driving times:

  • Madrid to Barcelona- 6 hours
  • London to Barcelona- 16 hours
  • Rome to Barcelona- 13 and a half hours
  • Budapest to Barcelona- 18 and a half hours
  • Berlin to Barcelona- 16 hours and 45 minutes
  • Amsterdam to Barcelona- 14 hours and 45 minutes

While you could take a train or drive, of course, flying is much faster. For example, a train from London to Barcelona will take about 15 hours once you factor in all of the stops. On the other hand, you could take a flight in just about 2 hours. There is clearly a stark contrast in time savings.

If you happen to be traveling from Madrid to Barcelona, you can take the “Puente Aéreo” or the Air Bridge service. There is also a Barcelona high-speed rail line, which transports people back and forth between Madrid and Barcelona in just about 2 1/2 hours.

Some Details about the Barcelona Airport

The Barcelona Airport is the second most popular in all of Spain. In 2015 alone, there were about 40 million passengers! When the Olympics were held in Barcelona in 1992, the airport went through a major renovation, and more terminals were added. In typical Barcelona style, the renovation was even handled by an architect, namely, Ricard Bofill Levi.

And that's just part of the culture that you can see at the airport. For example, you can even see art by Joan Miro adorning the building on terminal 2B. (Incidentally, visiting the Fundacio Miro museum is one of the major Barcelona highlights that you can see when you visit Barcelona).
